Popular Spa Therapies Explained: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Aroma and Balinese
Interviews for therapist roles usually include a short practical. Knowing the standard therapy menu — and being able to describe it to a guest — matters as much as the technique itself.
The core menu
Most Indian spa menus are built from a handful of therapies.
- Swedish — long flowing strokes, relaxation focused, the usual baseline test
- Deep tissue — slower and firmer, targets specific muscle groups
- Aromatherapy — essential oil blends chosen with the guest
- Balinese — acupressure with stretching and long strokes
- Thai — assisted stretching on a mat, no oil
- Hot stone — heated basalt stones with classic strokes
- Foot reflexology — pressure points on the feet, often a short add-on
What interviewers actually check
Pressure control and consistency, draping and guest modesty, hygiene routine before and after the therapy, room setup and reset time, and how you handle a guest who reports discomfort mid-therapy.
Contraindications you must know
Be ready to explain when you would decline or modify a therapy — fever, recent surgery, skin infection, pregnancy without a specialised protocol, or a guest under the influence of alcohol. Employers treat this as a safety question, and a confident answer stands out.
